The Boomerrific™ Stage
Matt Thornhill and John Martin of the Boomer Project, in the October 2006 issue of their excellent newsletter, BoomerMarketingNews, suggest that the time is upon us to retire the term “retirement.” Boomers are changing the concept of retirement. Many are “retiring” from one career to start another, to change a lifestyle altogether, and/or to pursue avenues they are strongly interested in or passionate about. Some may slow down a little, but do not plan to stop for years to come or ever.
With the term “retirement” pushed aside, may I suggest that we consider boomers to be in the “terrific” stage. After all, your nearest dictionary provides definitions of terrific to mean very great, remarkable, extraordinary, very good and wonderful. Are not these quite accurate characteristics of our generation? Boomers in their younger years certainly thought of themselves this way…sometimes to the chagrin of the older generations. But the boomers did grow older and are consistently showing their true grit! I think that we can truly say that “boomers are terrific” or boomerrific™ . Considering the boomer generation in the boomerrific™ stage seems so much more accurate than relying on the term used by generations before us.

I agree.
The ideas in your mind will rule your world
Past generations held the same occupations for their entire working lives and depended on the “Company plan” (work until you die) for retirement income to supplement Social Security. Hopefully the company was still solvent when retirement age arrived. With today’s retirement account options, the opportunity exists to retire at an earlier age and pursue other interests and ultimately second careers in self-employment. My situation was just the opposite. I was self-employed for 30 years and joined the service sector as a second career. I only work 40 hours a week instead of 80; I get paid vacation instead of paying for vacation and have more time off than I can use, plus, I am building a retirement supplement for my “later” years. I am enjoying my “retirement!
