Is Terrorism a Real Threat??

I happen to believe that we are facing a horrific enemy that will take us down if we don't take the threat seriously. We cannot drop our guard for one moment in intercepting these guys or we will have another terrible attack on our own soil. Or---do you think the threat has been overblown and we shouldn't worry about it?

Hello fellow Boomers! I certainly believe the threat is real, and I also believe that we can—and maybe we have already—go overboard with our security. The conservative cry is that we chance to jeopardize our constitutional freedoms in exchange for Big Brother keeping us safe. Boomers have wisdom to know that history usually DOES repeat itself. Some claim we are slowly approaching a fascist state here in the US. No matter though, who wants bombings like those taking place in Israel or India here too? What else can we do besides wait and see? The best we can hope for is eventual peace in the Middle East, which seems to be the center of world conflict, and of which we are now a critical part. Fortunately, outside of a few attempted terrorist acts that were intercepted and thwarted, not much else has happened here since 911--thank God.

I believe terrorism is indeed a real threat and that we(citizens, security) must be on guard at all times working to identify the small situations that can grow to harmful levels. This is prevention or early intervention and we must, through education, know and learn as much as possible about what to look for and identify...both here in our country and in other countries. Being paranoid is not the answer! Being educated formally and informally is. Being stressed and fearful makes us uncertain and prone to mistakes. This is where relaxation and calmness must prevail. In a state of educated confidence and calmness, one is able to see the bigger picture and the details that need to be noted. This battle isn't just one for our troops. We must all step up and notice things, and get that information to the right authorities.

Yes, terrorism is a real threat. I am one who believes we need some security measures that employ a degree of profiling to pinpoint the threat and thwart it. I do not believe that our government is targeting "everyday citizens' without cause to thwart terrorism. If someone is being investigated, there is a reason. The United States is still the most open society in the world and probably the safest. In the minds of some, as long as there is not another attack, there is no threat and any investigation or preventive measure is unnecassary and interferes with civil rights of citizens and non-citizens alike. If we were to be attacked, these same people would say nobody did anything to protect them. So it becomes a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. I would rather be the former and be a little safer.

Thanks you all for your input. We definitely need to secure our borders and have no trust that Islamic terrists have any sense of compassion or fairness. They are evil, pure and simple. The only answer to them is to kill them. We definitely need to get the moderate Moslems in the middle east to shut down the madrasses that train young children to hate and kill. Only then will the middle east have any kind of future beyond death and destruction.

How do you tell a moderate moslem from any other one? If they will not stand up boldly and say STOP to terrorism then they are part of the problem. This is no different than the Christian that opposes abortion by killing abortionists. Both acts are an abomination and one does not make the other right. The islamic faith is not a religion of peace in any way, shape or form but there is a faction that beleives in a peaceful existence for themselves as well as others. These are the ones who must stand up for the faith and be counted. I also believe this is the faction of the current Iraqi leadership. But it must gain power before they can be independent enough to accomplish the latter part of your comment.

I totally agree. Politicians need to get their head out of the sand and understand what is real. We either fight in Iraq or american soil. It is the voters choice. There are no second chances dealing with terroist
